Types of Car Keys

Keyless Entry

Some older models and newer models come with keyless entry. This feature allows you to unlock your car without the need to insert a key or touch the door handle. Some of the most advanced systems have remote keyless access (RKI) that allows you to start your car and activate ten electronic accessories.

These systems rely on radio waves that are emitted by your vehicle and received by the receiver within the key fob. When you place your hand on the door handle or press a button that is mounted on the handle the key fob broadcasts its own signal that is matched with the one being broadcast by the vehicle's transmitter and the doors are then opened.

The most advanced keyless entry systems that are used in cars are equipped with smart technology. This lets you manage these systems using the mobile app or cloud-based management system. This helps you manage them if you have to grant guests or maintenance personnel access to your vehicles or buildings.

These systems aren't without flaws. The most significant negatives are related to security. If the key fob dies in the car when you are inside it will not be able transmit its signal and you won't be able to open the door or start the car. Although many manufacturers have systems that can warn you when the key is nearing death but they aren't foolproof.

Transponder Keys

One of the most popular types of car keys is transponder keys (also known as chip keys) that operate with microchips embedded in the head of the plastic on your car key. The microchip sends a low-level signal to the car's receiver that only matches the serial number that has been programmed into it by the manufacturer. This is to prevent unauthorized duplicate keys to ensure that only you are able start your car.

These keys are difficult to copy and are less prone to being stolen. They are more expensive than flat metal ones, but they can save you lots of money if you find locksmiths who are able to program them for your vehicle.

These keys aren't just safe, but they could also easily be damaged by children. They should be kept in a safe space that is out of reach of young children. The act of dropping or throwing them into water can be dangerous. Some require batteries, making them unsafe to keep around in the house.

A locksmith who is certified can typically duplicate these keys and reprogram them for you. This can be done for less than what you'd pay at a dealership and it's also more convenient.

Certain cars can have folding keys. They're essentially a traditional key, but with the metal folding into the body of plastic to make it more compact and easy to store in your pocket or on your key chain. They are also more difficult to clone and therefore more secure over other types of keys for cars.

They're not the most practical, but they will work if you have lost your regular car keys. They're also cheaper to replace than transponder keys and are a great choice for people who want to save money on their vehicle's security features.

Mechanical Keys

Modern cars do not require mechanical keys.
